Gaustad opened in 1855 as Norway's first state asylum, a model institution in yellow brick at the edge of the Nordmarka forest. But behind the architecture lay treatments that read today like horror fiction: lobotomies, electroshock without anaesthesia, belt restraints, isolation and drug trials on patients who could never refuse. Television has shown the hospital's preserved "chamber of horrors" of instruments. From this history grew the tales of those who never left Gaustad: staff and visitors have reported loud screams from empty rooms, hospital beds rattling on their own, and figures wandering the corridors at night. The hospital still operates, and the line between legend and memory is uncomfortably thin here — the horror is documented; only the ghosts are disputed.
