Where Grünerløkka now barbecues and sunbathes lay the city's great cemetery — some 60,000 dead remain beneath the picnic blankets.

Grünerløkka's green living room holds a secret under the grass: all of Sofienberg Park is a decommissioned burial ground. The cemetery was laid out in the shadow of the cholera years — in 1833 some 800 people died in Christiania in a single autumn — and between 1858 and 1931 around 60,000 people were interred here. As the city grew, the cemetery was turned into a park in stages in 1961 and 1972: the headstones were removed, but the dead were never moved. Beneath the sunbathers, barbecue smoke and football games, tens of thousands of Oslo citizens still rest in their graves. Only the Jewish section north of Sofienberg Church remains untouched, stones and all — a reminder of what the park really is, one of the city's most forgotten grounds of mourning.
