The five islets off Nesodden in the inner Oslofjord bear a name that betrays their dark past: Steilene, from "steile og hjul" — the wheel and the stake. The bodies and body parts of executed criminals were carried out here, fastened to wheels and hoisted on poles, plainly visible to every vessel bound for Christiania. The archipelago idyll was once the city's macabre shop window: justice's final station, where gulls and weather slowly finished what the executioner had begun. The islets Persteilene and Landsteilene still carry the stakes in their names, and seafarers are said to have crossed themselves passing at dusk. Today Steilene is a lighthouse station and recreation area — but the name refuses to let the history sink.
