In New Zealand's only castle, banker William Larnach's daughter Kate is said to still dance through the ballroom built for her birthday.

In the 1870s, politician and banker William Larnach raised a lavish castle on the Otago Peninsula outside Dunedin, but his family's story became one of the most tragic of the colonial era. His daughter Kate died of typhoid in 1891 at just 26, and is said to still drift through the ballroom her father built in her honour. Larnach himself, crushed by debt and family scandal, shot himself in Parliament House in Wellington in 1898. Visitors describe sudden cold drafts, unexplained figures and the feeling of being watched in the old rooms.
