Manila Film Center

Pasay, Metro Manila · Filippinerne · Theatre

Beneath the film palace floor, workers are said to lie entombed in concrete since the 1981 disaster – and they make themselves heard.

The Manila Film Center was rushed to completion for Imelda Marcos's 1982 film festival. At dawn on 17 November 1981, scaffolding collapsed and plunged scores of workers into wet cement; according to the persistent legend, several bodies were sealed into the floor when construction was ordered to continue. Ever since, people speak of moaning voices, whispers and figures moving through the auditoriums at night, making it Manila's most talked-about haunted building. After years of decay, the colossus by Manila Bay stands largely empty.
