The Skull Chapel, Czermna
Dolnośląskie · Polen · Church
Legend says those whose bones line the chapel never found rest — at night, whispers and footsteps are heard among three thousand skulls.
Legend holds that a curse lies over the Chapel of Skulls: those whose bones line the walls never found rest, and at night whispers and footsteps are said to be heard inside, sometimes figures moving between the skulls. Among the three thousand skulls on the ceiling and walls, individual fates can still be picked out — the village headman Martinec, shot by the Prussians for guiding Austrian troops, and beside him his wife, struck through the head as she threw herself in front of him.
In 1776 the priest Wacław Tomaszek found mass graves from the Thirty Years' War, the Silesian wars and the cholera epidemics, and over eight years he and the gravedigger built this ossuary, the only one of its kind in Poland. Another twenty thousand dead rest in the crypt below the floor.
