Wieliczka Salt Mine

Małopolskie · Polen · Mine

Deep in the Wieliczka salt mine dwells the Skarbnik – the grey-bearded guardian spirit with a blue-flamed lamp, who warns of cave-ins but punishes the greedy.

In the salt mine of Wieliczka, worked since the 13th century, miners have always believed in the Skarbnik: the guardian spirit of the underground from old Slavic folklore. He appears as a grey-bearded mine foreman with burning eyes and a lamp with a blue flame, sometimes taking the shape of a mouse, dog or cat. The Skarbnik warned miners of collapses, fire and flooding and guided lost souls through the dark – but he demanded honesty and hard work, and whoever whistled or cursed in the tunnels risked his wrath. One of the mine's chambers bears his name, with a salt sculpture carved by miners in their guardian's honour.
