Mansjonaria, Swietojanska 2

Warszawa · Polen · Historic building

Two cooks were tortured for a poison they never gave. Since 1524 the house on Swietojanska has whispered and rattled its dishes.

The house at Swietojanska 2, one of the few in the Old Town to survive, is where Stanislaw, the penultimate Duke of Mazovia, died in 1524, young, suddenly and without explanation. Rather than blame his own life of drink and women, the court cried poison, and two cooks from the ducal kitchen were seized and tortured. Nothing was ever proved against them. The house legend says their souls never left the building: whispering behind the walls and the sound of plates and pots knocking together in rooms that hold no kitchen. The duke's death is still unexplained, and historians have pointed for centuries at an intrigue around Queen Bona without ever being able to settle it.
