The Benedictine abbey stands on a limestone cliff directly above the Vistula and has been there since 1044. The legend attached to the place is older than the walls and was written down in Latin in the Greater Poland Chronicle in the thirteenth century. Walgierz the Bold, lord of Tyniec, won Helgunda, daughter of the Frankish king, by singing beneath her window three nights running, killed her German suitor in single combat and brought her home to the rock. The love ended in betrayal and blood, and Walgierz never found rest. Since then the rule the monks themselves repeat holds: when the brothers at Tyniec put wealth and pleasure before prayer, Walgierz steps out of the dark as a warning.
