On the corner of Piwna and Piekarska stood the tavern where the knight Macko Kwasizur sat among his drinking companions and boasted that nobody on earth was his equal, not even the devil. Out of the dark corner of the room stepped Chmielorz, horns in his matted hair and eyes like burning coals, and demanded what Warsaw expects of a devil: a wager. He put up a bag of gold, a jug of mead and a servant bound for ten years against the knight's precious musket, and the stake on the other side was of course Macko's soul. The Warsaw version of the story is not about courage but about cunning. Macko won by a trick involving the bench he was sitting on, and Chmielorz had to leave the Old Town laughed at, which for a devil is worse than losing.
