The dragon in the cave under the rock demanded a maiden a month, until the cobbler Skuba filled a lamb with sulphur and left it at the mouth.

The limestone cave at the foot of Wawel hill is Krakow's oldest horror story in solid form. In the days of King Krak the Wawel Dragon is said to have lain in here, demanding cattle from the town and, in the bloodier tellings, a young girl every month. No knight came out again. It was Skuba the cobbler who solved it: he sewed up a lambskin packed with sulphur and left it at the mouth of the den. The dragon swallowed it, felt the fire catch in its throat and drank from the Vistula until it burst. The cave runs 270 metres, and visitors go down a spiral staircase through three chambers before coming out at the river, where Bronislaw Chromy's bronze dragon has stood since 1972, breathing fire every few minutes as a reminder of who held the ground first.
