High between the towers of St Mary Magdalene's, the souls of sinful maidens are said to sweep the bridge for eternity – night walkers hear the rasp of brooms.

Forty-five metres above the streets of Wrocław, the Penitents' Bridge spans the two towers of St Mary Magdalene's church. Legend holds that the souls of girls who preferred amusement and flirtation to marriage and duty are condemned to sweep the narrow bridge forever. Late-night passers-by are said to have heard moans and the sound of brooms rasping against the stone above. One version tells of vain Tekla, cursed by her father and set upon the bridge until the kind-hearted young witch Martynka persuaded a sorcerer to lift the spell. Today the bridge is a viewing platform – with perhaps Poland's most unusual ghost story.
