Śnieżka – Realm of the Mountain Spirit
Nedre Schlesien (Karkonosze) · Polen · Natural site
On the slopes of Śnieżka, the Mountain Spirit Karkonosz – mockingly nicknamed Liczyrzepa – is said to keep his invisible fortress.
Śnieżka is the highest peak of the Sudetes and the heart of the legends of Duch Gór, the Mountain Spirit – also known as Karkonosz, Rzepiór, or mockingly Liczyrzepa, "the Turnip Counter". As early as a 1561 map of Silesia he appears as a monster with a griffin's head and stag's antlers, and for centuries hikers have blamed sudden storms on his wrath. In the best-known tale he abducted a princess to his mountain fortress; she tricked him into counting every turnip in the mountains and escaped while he counted – hence the nickname. Those hiking to the summit in fog are still advised not to provoke the master of the mountains.
