Teutonic commander Zygmunt von Ramungen, killed at Grunwald in 1410, is said to still watch over his castle – cursing those who let it fall to ruin.

Zygmunt von Ramungen governed the Teutonic castle of Gniew from 1407 to 1410 and vainly advised against war with Poland. When the Grand Master sent him to the Battle of Grunwald anyway, he cried that he would sooner entrust the castle 'to evil spirits' – and fell in battle. Legend says he returned as a ghost. During the great castle fire of 1921 he was seen pacing the ruins, cursing all who had contributed to its destruction and vowing not to rest until the fortress regained its former glory. Locals still speak of the commander's figure in the corridors at night.
