Grodziec Castle

Nedre Schlesien · Polen · Castle

On the basalt hill of Grodziec appears the "Red Spectre" – a knight in a crimson cloak who once frightened an unjust castellan into mending his ways.

The medieval castle of Grodziec crowns an extinct volcanic cone in Lower Silesia and ranks among the region's most evocative strongholds. Its best-known ghost is the "Red Spectre" (Czerwony Upiór), a knightly figure in a crimson cloak who, according to legend, appeared before the harsh castellan Jan and compelled him to change his ways – ever since, the spectre is said to return as a guardian of justice at the castle. Visitors tell of a figure in red glimpsed in window openings and along the battlements. The castle hosts overnight stays and torch-lit events.
