The Hospital Dona Estefânia is Lisbon's great children's hospital, named after the young Queen Estefânia, who died of diphtheria in 1859 aged just 22, and whose wish for a hospital for poor children was fulfilled after her death. Over the years, staff have described a glowing female figure in a long, trailing skirt moving through the wards at night – the queen herself, it is said, watching over the sick children. Others tell of footsteps in empty corridors and unexplained sounds from the attic. Unlike most ghosts, she is regarded as a protector.
