Bánffy Castle in Bonțida near Cluj was once called the Versailles of Transylvania, before retreating German troops looted and burned it in 1944. Its best-known legend concerns a lady of the castle who betrayed her husband: a stable boy witnessed everything, and to keep her secret she is said to have killed him and buried his body in the courtyard. Ever since, Bonțida has ranked for many as Romania's most haunted place – visitors report voices from empty halls and unexplained figures appearing in photographs. The castle is slowly being restored and now hosts the great Electric Castle festival.
