The castle was built to plans its grieving owner believed his dead daughter dictated during séances – and at night her piano is still said to play.

The small stone castle in Câmpina may be Europe's only building designed by a ghost: when the scholar Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu lost his brilliant 19-year-old daughter Iulia to tuberculosis, he turned to spiritism and built the castle in 1893–1896 following instructions he was convinced came from her. It contains a special darkened séance chamber, the camera obscura, where night after night the father sought contact with the dead girl. Locals say piano notes drift from the empty castle at night, and a girl in white has been glimpsed at the windows. Today the castle is a museum devoted to father and daughter – and the séance room remains.
