Paul I built Mikhailovsky Castle as an impregnable fortress against the conspiracies he feared – yet just forty days after moving in, on the night of 24 March 1801, he was strangled in his own bedchamber by plotting officers. Legend holds that a holy fool foretold his lifespan in the letters of the inscription above the castle gate: forty-seven characters, forty-seven years of life. From the 1840s, cadets at the engineering school spread stories of the emperor's figure appearing at the windows at night, candle burning. The ghost with the candle flame remains Saint Petersburg's most famous apparition.
