A herdsman served almost for free and fattened the cattle – but under his hood hid horns, and under his foot a cloven hoof.

A farmer in Knäred got a herdsman who asked only for his food in payment, and the cattle grew fat and fine through the summer. But the herdsman was strange: dark-skinned, silent, always with his hood pulled down, and preferring to sleep out in the barn. When the farmer glimpsed a horn beneath the hood and a servant saw a cloven hoof instead of a foot, he dismissed him at once. The herdsman went into the forest, but then the animals behaved wildly, and from that moment the cattle failed and grew lean.
