A grave sinner had to stand three Thursday nights at the altar of Kareby church, locked inside a circle of chalk.

In Kareby it was said that someone who had done real evil could atone by standing at the church altar for three Thursday nights in a row. A ring was drawn in chalk around him, and he was not allowed to step beyond it. He is said to have felt surrounded by fire, while the Evil One tried everything to lure him out of the circle. If he endured, he was freed from his punishment.
