The priest conjured the devil down by the road and laid a cross of twigs – and people still add a branch.

In Holt they tell of the priest Søren Sode at Tved, versed in black arts. Once while preaching at Birkenæs he sensed something wrong at home, rode there, and found a servant girl had read the devil free. He set him to count the trees of a dense forest and twist rope from sand, then bound him and conjured him down by the road beneath a cross of branches. To this day people add a twig to the tall heap called Varpet.
