Werlauf and the Ropemaker on Skjoldsanden, Salten

Nordland · Norge · Kyrka · Uhygge 3/5

Mid-sermon the priest sensed the devil was loose – and his daughter had set him to twist rope from sand.

The priest Erik Werlauf in Folla had attended the Wittenberg school and owned the black book. Once, preaching at Kjerringøy, he sensed the devil was loose and hurried home. His daughter had read him free and set him to twist rope from sand on Skjoldsanden. The priest drew a ring in the ashes of the hearth and conjured him down through it, so the ash flew about his ears. The marks in Skjoldsanden are said to show still from when the devil was a ropemaker at Rørstad.
