The horse stopped dead, the priest took off a wheel on purpose – then loosed the imp from the black book.
Reverend Johan Irgens, priest in Surnadal, drove home one Sunday evening from Rindal. At Raneskleiva the horse would go no further, and the priest had the servant take off a wheel. When the servant objected that there would then be no ride, the priest told him to put it back, drew the black book from his pocket and loosed the imp. He soon came, took the wheel axle on his shoulder and the loose wheel in his hand, and off they went in a shower of sparks until they reached the parsonage at Øye.
