Priest Hadeln and the Dead Horse, Råde

Østfold · Norge · Sägenplats · Uhygge 3/5

He drove Black Erik out through the keyhole and made him a wheel – but warned against feeding the horse.

When Hadeln was priest in Råde, Black Erik haunted a farm as a great black dog and bit fast onto a table leg. The priest conjured the old one out through the keyhole amid whining and shrieking. On the way home one wheel fell off the carriage, and the priest forced the devil to serve as the wheel home. Once arrived, he forbade the boy to give the horse anything to eat, but the kind-hearted boy gave it hay anyway – and the next morning the horse lay dead in the stable.
