Tölløv Knæsu and the Ride That Left Him Cross-Eyed

Hedmark · Norge · Sägenplats · Uhygge 3/5

A soldier got a ride home for Christmas Eve from a stranger with unusually long fingers — and stole one glance too many at the devil, who left him cross-eyed for life.

From Elverum it is told of Tölløv Knæsu, who served the king and longed to get home for Christmas Eve. The captain told him to set out and someone would give him a ride. On the way came a stranger who drove furiously fast, through the air and over the ground, and turned in at a farm to look in on some card-players where a brawl arose. Tölløv recognised his father's name carved over the byre door and knew he was truly home. But when he could not help glancing after the devil, he was left cross-eyed for the rest of his life.
