She was first to the Christmas dawn service and sang along with the hymn – until she looked up and saw that every soul in the pews lay buried in the churchyard outside.

One Christmas morning a farmer's wife from Nyland set out early for Njurunda old church to be sure of a good seat. Light already spilled from the windows, the gate stood open and so did the door. Puzzled that the service had begun without her, she crouched down, read the opening prayer, opened her hymn book and sang along. She heard the priest reading at the altar and the congregation answering in song. Only when she raised her eyes did she understand: every face in the pews belonged to someone she knew to be dead, and so did the priest at the altar. She leapt up and fled, and in that instant every candle went out and the church door slammed shut behind her. In the lychgate she met the sexton, on his way in to light the Christmas candles. The legend was recorded in 1918.
