High in Skuleberget's sheer cliff gapes the Robbers' Cave — whoever sat up there saw every traveller long before the traveller saw him.

High in the cliff face of Skuleberget is a hollow known as Skulegrottan, the King's Cave or the Robbers' Cave, and according to the legend preserved in the Nordic Museum's folklore archive it sheltered a band of highwaymen in the seventeenth century who robbed travelling merchants and the villages around. The cave is in fact no real cave but a recess only a few metres deep — but the position is unmatched: from here the whole road south is visible, and whoever sat there saw every traveller long before the traveller saw him. The mountain rises almost vertically 295 metres above the sea by the E4 at Docksta, and across it runs the world's highest shoreline: the sea stood 286 metres higher than today when the ice sheet let go. Today the cave is reached by stairs and fixed ladders, for those without a fear of heights.
