Bedok Reservoir

Bedok · Singapore · Natural site

After a wave of drownings, kayakers report tugs from beneath the surface – and at night a mother and her son are said to be heard laughing across the dark water.

By day the reservoir at Bedok is a peaceful recreation area, but among Singapore's ghost enthusiasts it is infamous. In 2011 and 2012 several bodies were recovered from the water in a string of suicides and drownings, among them a mother and her three-year-old son, and an inter-religious prayer ceremony was held to calm the site. Since then, kayakers have described unexplained tugs in the water, and residents claim to hear a woman and a child laughing across the dark surface at night. Pontianaks – the female vampire spirits of Malay folklore – are also said to have been sighted in the trees along the shore.
