Punggol's last old bungalow is said to be protected by a guardian female spirit – rumour has it the excavators broke down every time demolition was due to begin.

Matilda House was built in 1902 by the Cashin family and is the only surviving colonial bungalow in Punggol, now surrounded by new high-rises. While the house stood abandoned, rumours spread that three construction workers had died in connection with demolition attempts and that machines broke down whenever they came near – punishment, it was said, from a female guardian spirit seen sitting in the trees watching over the house. The story made the bungalow one of Singapore's most talked-about haunted addresses. Today the house has been restored as a condominium clubhouse, and according to residents with "the sight", the lights are kept on around the clock – just in case.
