In the ruin of Čachtice the Blood Countess Erzsébet Báthory was walled up until her death – and her victims are said to still wail among the stones.

The ruin of Čachtice Castle above the Váh valley is forever tied to Erzsébet Báthory, the Blood Countess – accused in the 1611 proceedings of torturing and killing dozens, in legend hundreds, of young girls, and of bathing in their blood to preserve her youth. The countess was walled into a chamber of the castle and died there in 1614; her grave has never been found with certainty. Ever since, tales tell of the girls' wailing cries in the ruin, of figures among the walls, and of the countess herself appearing in the moonlight. It is Slovakia's most infamous site, feeding the horror imagination for four centuries – from local legend to Hollywood.
