Mae Nak Shrine (Wat Mahabut)

Bangkok · Thailand · Monastery

By the Phra Khanong canal, Thailand's most beloved ghost Mae Nak still waits for her husband.

In the grounds of Wat Mahabut stands a small shrine to Mae Nak, a young wife who died in childbirth in the nineteenth century while her husband Mak was away at war. When he returned she carried on as if nothing had happened — until he saw her stretch her arm impossibly far to catch a dropped lime and realised he was living with the dead. Her spirit is said to have terrorised the whole Phra Khanong district until a powerful monk finally bound her. Today pilgrims bring silk dresses and offerings: pregnant women pray for safe deliveries and young men for exemption from the military draft.
