Where the Bosphorus opens into the Black Sea, five black rocks lie off the cove of Rumelifeneri. The largest is called Öreke Taşı, and in antiquity they were the Symplegades, the clashing rocks. Sailors were convinced they moved, sliding together to crush any ship that tried to pass between them. In the Argonaut story Jason followed King Phineus's advice and released a dove ahead of the prow. When the bird came through with only its tail feathers clipped, he ordered the crew to row for their lives, and the Argo made it into the Black Sea losing only the ornament from its stern. On Öreke Taşı the remains of a Roman shrine to Apollo were found — offerings from those who got past. The sea breaks white over them even on calm days, and the village fishermen count them worse than the weather.
