The ruins of Dunga Palace are said to swarm with shetani spirits at night – this is where the drums were kept that beat by themselves when danger threatened Zanzibar.

In the middle of Unguja island stand the ruins of Dunga Palace, built in the mid-19th century for Zanzibar's last traditional ruler bearing the title Mwinyi Mkuu. The palace housed the dynasty's sacred regalia – two horns and two great drums which, according to legend, began to beat of their own accord whenever the island was in peril. When the line died out at the end of the 19th century the palace fell into ruin, and today only walls remain among tall, whispering trees. Peaceful by day – but at night the ruins are said to be haunted by a host of fearsome shetani, the spirits of Zanzibari folk belief.
