The Green Man's Tunnel
Pennsylvania · USA · Bridge
The Green Man was a real person. Raymond Robinson was disfigured by an electrical accident as a boy and walked the roads at night to avoid being stared at.
The legend says a man walking a deserted road in South Park, Pennsylvania was struck by lightning and still walks the country roads. Another version has an electrician working on the tunnel lights when something went wrong.
The truth is better and considerably sadder, and it should be told properly.
Raymond Robinson was a real man. As a boy in 1919 he climbed a bridge to look at a bird's nest and touched a live trolley line. It should have killed him. Instead he lost his eyes, his nose and an ear, and lived another sixty five years with a face people could not look at.
He walked the back roads of western Pennsylvania at night, when nobody would see him. People went out looking for him. Some were kind. Many were not.
He died in 1985 and is buried near Koppel. The tunnel is disused and visible from the road.
