Theatrical legend David Belasco built his playhouse in 1907 with a secret duplex apartment beneath the roof, reached by a private elevator. Dressed in a clerical collar – hence the nickname "Bishop of Broadway" – he controlled every detail on stage. After his death in 1931, actors began reporting a man in a clerical collar seated in the empty box during rehearsals, handshakes in the wings, and curtains and doors moving on cue. The elevator to his apartment, long out of service, is still heard grinding at night. With him comes the "Blue Lady": a young actress said to have fallen down the elevator shaft on her way up to Belasco's nocturnal parties, who now drifts through the auditorium in blue. Companies still greet him politely on opening nights.
