From 1885 the small island in the East River held Riverside Hospital, where the city banished its contagious: smallpox, typhus, tuberculosis. Its most famous inmate was the cook Mary Mallon – "Typhoid Mary" – a healthy carrier of typhoid who infected household after household and was forcibly isolated here for a total of 26 years, until her death in the shoreline cottage in 1938. The island also witnessed one of the city's worst disasters: when the steamer General Slocum burned on June 15, 1904, over a thousand Sunday excursionists died, mostly women and children from Little Germany, and the current drove the bodies onto North Brother's shores, where hospital staff hauled them in for hours. Abandoned since 1963, the island is now a bird sanctuary where creeper swallows the hospital ruins. Boaters tell of children's cries across the water on June evenings, and a lone female figure staring out from the tree line.
