Henry Wells was locked in the attic of the new courthouse while a mob gathered below. A storm was coming in. His face is still in the glass.

The original courthouse at Carrollton, Alabama burned down in 1876, and Henry Wells was blamed for it.

Wells was a Black man living out in the county. He was arrested and held in the garret of the new courthouse. A mob gathered outside demanding he be handed over, and a thunderstorm was coming in.

He went to the garret window and looked down at them.

His face has been in that pane of glass ever since. It has been shot at, washed, and left through a century and a half of weather, and it is still there. The county put a frame around it and it is the town's best known sight.

Wells did not survive what followed, and the record of exactly how he died is not clean.

What the window preserves is a Black man looking down at a mob that had come to kill him, and it is worth going to look at for that reason and no other.

The courthouse is a working county building.
