This restaurant in Savannah, Georgia was built in the 1700s as an inn for sailors, on the edge of what were then the docks.

The story told is that Captain Flint drank here with his crew and used a secret passage down to the water to get people onto his ship.

One clarification is needed. Captain Flint is a character in Treasure Island, and Robert Louis Stevenson does mention Savannah in the book, which is the whole basis of the connection. He was not a real man and never came here.

What is real is the building, which is among the oldest standing in Georgia, and the tunnel, which exists.

The practice behind the story is also real. Sailors were got aboard ships against their will in port towns across the world, and Savannah's waterfront had the same reputation as Portland's and Liverpool's.
