Ninety two people died in the Our Lady of the Angels school fire on 1 December 1958. Most of them are buried here.
On 1 December 1958 a fire broke out at Our Lady of the Angels school in Chicago. Eighty seven children and three nuns died, and the toll eventually reached ninety two. It remains one of the worst school fires in American history and it changed fire codes across the country.
Most of the dead are buried at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois.
A new school was built over the site of the old one and nothing has ever been reported there.
The cemetery is a different matter, though what happened there belongs to a different tradition. Beginning in the 1980s, a man reported visions at Queen of Heaven, every day except Tuesdays, and said the Blessed Mother was speaking to him. A tree on the grounds became part of the same phenomenon. Very large crowds came.
That is a Marian apparition claim rather than a haunting, and the Catholic church investigates such things carefully and rarely endorses them.
What brought people here first was the children. Ninety two of them, buried together, from one morning.
