The woman buried beneath it died leaving several small children. Before she died she told her husband that if he remarried and his new wife treated those children badly, her stone would bleed.

The stone has been replaced several times and the staining has returned each time.

What lifts this above the standard bleeding tombstone legend, of which there are dozens in America, is that the cemetery has put up an inscription in front of the grave explaining what the story is. Somebody decided the account was worth recording on site rather than leaving it to visitors.

Iron in the stone and iron in the groundwater will produce rust coloured staining that comes back after replacement, which is the ordinary explanation and does nothing to weaken the story.
