Bakers Island Light
Massachusetts · USA · Lighthouse
The fog bell on Bakers Island was destroyed by lightning — yet it is still said to sound out over the water at night, and never by day.
Bakers Island lies a few miles off Salem harbour, and its light has guarded the approach since 1798. The island's best-known legend concerns the fog signal: the old bell was struck out of action and taken out of service, yet fishermen and summer residents insist it still sounds across the water — always at night, never in daylight — a warning from the keepers who drowned when their boat capsized on the way back to the mainland in a storm. The island also has Lucy, a keeper's daughter who by tradition dressed as a ghost to frighten intruders away from her father's light, and who some say is still at it. Lamps are seen going on and off in houses standing empty.
