The ground on Howard Street was still an open field on the September day in 1692 when the eighty-one-year-old farmer Giles Corey refused to answer the charge against him. He was pressed to death under stones, and legend has him spending his last breath cursing the sheriff and the whole town. The story has stayed the same ever since: Corey's figure is seen standing silently among the gravestones shortly before something bad happens to Salem — before the great fire of 1914, before accidents and deaths. Salem's sheriffs are said to have carried the curse longest; several suffered sudden heart trouble, and one left office early and wrote about it himself. The burying ground was only laid out in 1801, but it is the field beneath it that people come to see.
