Ipswich Bar is the sandbar where the river meets the sea, and by the town's oldest legend it is where Harry Main can be heard. He is said to have lived in the 1600s as a smuggler and wrecker, a 'mooncusser' who lit fires on the beach on pitch-black nights so ships would run aground and could be plundered. His punishment was to be chained after death to that same bar and condemned to coil a cable of sand for eternity. Each time the cable snaps his roar of baffled rage is heard — and for generations Ipswich people said that is the sound carried in over the marshes in a gale. His supposed treasure drew diggers for a century; one swore a pack of black cats with eyes of fire drove him off.
