Harry Maine's ghost is said to have haunted the Water Street house until the town's ministers were finally called in to pray him out.

The Jabesh Sweet House of 1713 stands on Water Street near the river, in the quarter where the wrecker Harry Maine is said by tradition to have lived. After his death his ghost is supposed to have come back here: noises in the rooms, objects moving, an unease the families eventually could not live with. Ipswich's recorded local history says the haunting grew so bad that the town's ministers were called to pray in the house — and that it stopped afterwards. It is one of the few Essex County hauntings where tradition also accounts for how it ended. The house is a private home and best seen from the street; the rest of the Water Street block looks much as it did when the story began.
