Ropes Mansion was built around 1727 and bought in 1768 by Judge Nathaniel Ropes. The legend, though, belongs to his daughter Abigail — Nabby — who was carrying coals from one room to another in 1839 when her dress caught fire. She died of the burns, unmarried and in mid-life, and it is she the house is said to have kept. Staff and visitors describe a sudden smell of smoke where nothing is burning, cold spots in the rooms facing the garden, and a stifled scream in the upstairs hall. Some say Nabby is made to relive the same moment over and over. The house is cared for by the Peabody Essex Museum and its formal garden stands open behind it — that is where most people say they feel her closest.
