The Salem Inn is made up of three old sea captains' houses, and the principal one, the West House on Summer Street, was built in 1834 for Nathaniel West. The story lives in its main staircase. For decades the staff have called the phenomenon Katherine: a sudden cold current of air that passes close by anyone climbing the stairs, sometimes followed by a child's feet running on the landing above when that floor is empty. In room 17 guests say they have woken to someone standing beside the bed; some call her Katherine, others Elizabeth after West's wife, who left him. In the ground-floor parlour a black cat is said to move along the wall and disappear at the door.
