Spurlington Tunnel

Kentucky · USA · Execution site

Train robbers hid at the end of the branch line in Taylor County. An old woman took them in, not knowing what they were, and they decided she knew too.

Spurlington Tunnel near Campbellsville, Kentucky is held locally to be cursed, and the story of how it happened is unusually complete.

After a train robbery at Corbin, several of the robbers came up the branch line through Marion County into Taylor County and stopped where the track ran out. An old woman lived there, and many in the area called her a witch. She looked after the men, not knowing what they had done.

When they decided to move on, they did not want anyone able to say where they had been. They threatened her, and then they decided to kill her.

She warned them what would follow if they did.

That warning is the curse the tunnel carries. What is described there since belongs to it rather than to any of the ordinary railway deaths that a cutting of this age accumulates.

The tunnel is long, unlit, on a disused line, and is genuinely dangerous to enter. It has been a destination for local teenagers for generations, which is the practical reason the story is still being told.
