This house at Port Monmouth, New Jersey was a tavern during the Revolution, and it earned its name honestly. The owner welcomed British troops in, listened to what they were planning, and passed it on to Washington's men.
Before that the building is said to have been used by pirates, who stored goods here and, according to the local account, hid treasure in it.
One thing has to be said, because it is well documented. Much of the elaborate ghost lore attached to this house, the named figures and the detailed backstories, was created in the twentieth century by a curator, and later research by the county historical society dismantled a great deal of it.
The building itself is genuine and is one of the oldest structures in New Jersey.
That is worth more than the invented parts. It stood through the Revolution on a shore the British controlled.
The house is a museum and is open.
