Lyle was an old miner who died in his sleep in his own room at this California hotel. You can still book the room. Do not leave cosmetics on his dresser.
The Groveland Hotel in California is a bed and breakfast, and its long term resident is an old miner called Lyle, who died in his sleep in his own room and did not leave.
You can stay in Lyle's room. Guests who do report makeup thrown off the dresser and the water tap turning itself on and off.
The first version of this account described him as disliking people, and women in particular. A correction filed in March 2005 takes issue with that, and the hotel's own position is worth recording: Lyle likes people perfectly well and enjoys playing with them. What he cannot abide is women's cosmetics left on his dresser, which he moves.
That is a very specific objection, and it is the reason this entry is here. A ghost who dislikes women is a stock character. A ghost with an opinion about what belongs on a particular piece of furniture in a particular room is somebody who lived there.
Groveland sits on the road to Yosemite and the hotel is a working business.
